Abstract

Recommendations about what we should eat and what we should not eat to keep us healthy seem to change daily in the media. Over history, trends in diets have also changed but the general recommendations for healthy living have remained relatively constant. A ‘balanced’ diet of the main constituents (proteins, carbohydrates, dairy produce and fruit and vegetables) has survived the test of time. There have been attempts to establish exactly what proportions of the diet should be filled with particular foodstuffs and how they should be eaten throughout history. Early scholars recommended that food should balance the four humours and therefore maintain the equilibrium of the body and this was dependent on individual temperaments (Wright, 2010).
