Abstract

I will be focusing on aspects of the visual identity of young adult dystopian cinema and related young adult fantasy adventure films and series,. The session will focus on Divergent (2014) although my scholarly interest includes the mainstream adaptations released from about 2012 to 2018 in cinema, and extends to films and series beyond this cluster: for example, The Maze Runner (2014), How I Live Now (2013), The Darkest Minds (2018), The Tribe (1999-2003) and Amazon Prime’s The Wilds (2020, 2022) and Panic (2021). These texts are mainly American but include co-productions and global filming locations. My scholarly interest in these hybrid texts has included their emphasis on the intersection of identities with settings, including gamified urban cityscapes, constructed nature and immersive virtual reality. Although theories and philosophies of virtual reality have been applied to dystopian and science fiction media, young adult media narrativise virtual identities in specific ways. Whether adaptations or from original scripts, these YA texts characteristically make hybrid use of visual codes relating to dystopian, science fiction and art cinema, among other screen genres.
