Abstract

The study of sex-related differences has been well-supported by the use of various measures of facial proportion or actual measure, an area known as faciometrics. In the main, however, and with a few noted exceptions, the findings have been restricted to primarily white, student-aged samples. The current study investigates faciometric differences between black and white people in such sexually dimorphic traits. Facial images of 100 black and 100 white men and women were measured to produce four recognised faciometrics, i.e. cheekbone prominence, facial with to height ratio (fWHR), lower facial height to full facial height ratio, and facial width to lower facial height ratio (fW/LHR). A 2 (men and women) x 2 (black and white) MANOVA was conducted with the four DV’s as above. Results showed a significant main effect for gender, F(4, 193) = 12.97, p < .001, and ethnicity, F(4, 193) = 124.34, p < .001. Further analysis showed that the key differences occurred with regards to the fW/LHR, with a significant difference between white men and women, F(1, 98) = 6.26, p = .014, but not between black men and women, F(1, 98) = 0.34, p = NS. The findings indicate that research utilising faciometrics in primarily white, student-aged samples may be safely generalisable to white and black groups, though assumptions based upon the fW/LHR (or composites including fW/LHR ) should be considered with caution. Future research is also required to establish the generalisability of these faciometrics as ethnic groups age.
