Abstract

There is increasing recognition of the need to ensure NHS support workers have the appropriate knowledge and competences to provide care to patients. In the absence of statutory national guidelines for training, individual bodies are taking their own initiatives. In 2011, the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust introduced an innovative development programme for its wardbased nursing healthcare support workers. This article describes the results of an independent evaluation of the programme. The evaluation found a wide range of performance improvements, including reduced errors, improved safety, communication skills and discretionary effort. Reasons for its effectiveness, including building of staff confidence, are discussed.
